SMS group and JFE Steel start up Japan?s first stamp-charging coke oven battery with smokeless charging technology
Mönchengladbach, 13.10.2026 (PresseBox) -
JFE Steel has commenced operations at Battery 6-A in Fukuyama, Japan?s first Paul Wurth stamp-charging coke oven battery
Paul Wurth?s SOPRECO® smokeless charging technology significantly reduces emissions during charging and carbonization
The ultra-low NOx heating system enhances environmental performance, process stability, and operational efficiency
The milestone underscores SMS group?s leadership in advanced Paul Wurth cokemaking technologies and strengthens its long-term cooperation with JFE Steel
The 52-oven battery has an annual production capacity of 420,000 tons
JFE Steel Corporation has commenced operations at coke oven Battery 6-A at its Fukuyama Works in Japan. The start-up marks a milestone for the Japanese steel industry: Battery 6-A is the country?s first Paul Wurth stamp-charging coke oven battery equipped with SOPRECO® smokeless charging technology.
Battery 6-A comprises 52 ovens and has an annual production capacity of 420,000 tons. The facility introduces stamp charging to Japan for the first time. With this process, the coal blend is compacted into a dense, stable cake before being charged into the oven. The resulting higher and more homogeneous bulk density supports consistent coke quality and efficient oven operation.
For emission control, the battery combines a smokeless charging system with Paul Wurth?s SOPRECO® single-oven pressure control technology. SOPRECO® continuously regulates the pressure in each oven, increasing suction during charging and the initial carbonization phase. This helps prevent raw gas from escaping through oven openings and substantially reduces fugitive emissions.
The battery also features an ultra-low NOx heating system, designed to support stable and efficient heating while reducing NOx emissions.
The project scope also includes the turnkey delivery of an SCP (stamping, charging and pushing) machine, together with a new charging-gas transfer car.
This milestone marks an important step forward in the decades?long partnership between JFE Steel and SMS. Building on the successful delivery of several top?charged batteries, this latest project involved a comprehensive shift to stamp-charging technology, requiring close coordination and rigorous engineering execution.
Bernard Steenken, CSO, APAC & MEA at SMS group, commented: ?With Battery 6-A, we have taken an important technological step together with JFE Steel. Introducing stamp charging in Japan while meeting demanding requirements for emissions, efficiency and reliability required close coordination from engineering through to start-up. This project shows what can be achieved when strong technology and close customer collaboration come together.?
Battery 6-A is expected to become a reference installation for low?emission, high?efficiency cokemaking technology in the Japanese market. The project highlights SMS?s strategic role in supporting steel producers worldwide in their efforts to modernize cokemaking assets and reduce environmental impact.
?The 6-A coke oven has successfully commenced operations as Japan's first large-scale stamp-charged coke oven. Through the adoption of state-of-the-art technologies, this project has successfully realized both environmental improvements and highly efficient operations. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to SMS group for its continuous cooperation and strong partnership throughout every phase of the project, from basic planning and construction to commissioning and performance testing,? said Kunihiro Nuta, construction project manager at JFE Steel Corporation.
