The combustion of hydrogen produces only water. It can be easily stored and transported. Methods for producing hydrogen, such as steam methane reforming (SMR) or water electrolysis, have drawbacks that may be eliminated with silver. The SMR method produces carbon dioxide. And water electrolysis requires a large amount of electricity, resulting in high costs. Researchers found that adding silver to a nickel-based catalyst allows it to produce more hydrogen gas and leads to improvements.
A silver-nickel alloy excels in stability and ensures long-term use. This is a particularly important advantage for environmentally friendly hydrogen production on an industrial scale. These are the results of research seeking safe and durable energy sources without lithium. In vanadium oxide batteries, attempts to prevent the growth of undesirable crystalline growths through the use of silver were successful.
This is just one example of how the potential applications of silver are growing, including in the context of climate change. High energy prices are not just a burden on Europe. And there are calculations showing that electrification is a win for millions of households. Because energy becomes secure and affordable. Households in the EU can save around 2,000 euros annually if they switch from gas heating and combustion-engine cars to electric cars and heat pumps. Hydrogen technology also requires platinum, which Sibanye-Stillwater can supply.
Sibanye-Stillwater (- https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/sibanye-stillwater-ltd/ -) is one of the major producers of gold and platinum group metals and operates on five continents. Its projects are located in the U.S. and South Africa. Battery metals such as nickel, chromium, copper, and cobalt, as well as recycling, are also part of the business. South African gold operations have become more profitable due to high gold prices.
Discovery Silver (- https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/discovery-silver-corp/ -) owns the highly promising Cordero project in Mexico. The reserve amounts to more than 300 million ounces of silver. Annual production of approximately 37 million silver-equivalent ounces is expected over the first twelve years. The company has also recently begun producing gold (Porcupine Project). Production of approximately 260,000 to 300,000 ounces of gold is expected for 2026.
